Women in Tech: Pioneers who made History

filtro-02

The beginning: back to the 19th Century

When we think of tech pioneers, it's easy to picture a group of white, male entrepreneurs: Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and John McAfee. But the truth is that women have always been at the forefront of innovation in the tech industry. From early computer programmers to today's social media moguls, women have made significant contributions to the field of technology. In recognition of their achievements, let's take a moment to celebrate the tech pioneer women who made history.

The beginning of modern computer science can be traced back to the 19th century when British mathematician and early computing pioneer Ada Lovelace first developed the concept of a general-purpose computer. She was also an early proponent of algorithm design, and her ideas helped lay the foundation for future computing technologies. Building on the work of Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, Lovelace was able to produce the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. Today, she is often regarded as the first computer programmer.

Later developments: Grace Hopper

In the mid-20th century, women such as Grace Hopper led major advancements in software development and programming languages. Their pioneering work played a crucial role in the establishment of the first commercial computers and programming languages.

In particular, Hopper developed programs that would help analyze data and provide insights for the military. Hopper developed a programming language called FLOW-MATIC in 1954. Her work on FLOW-MATIC would eventually form the foundation of COBOL (COmmon Business-Oriented Language), one of the first standardized programming languages.

Today's women of Computer Science

Despite the high demand for women in computer science, the field remains male-dominated in the United States. According to the National Girls Collaboration Project, only 18% of degrees in computer in the US are earned by women. For this reason, many colleges and universities have started to offer programs and scholarships specifically for women in computer science.

By providing opportunities for women to explore their interest in computer science, these programs hope to increase the number of women entering the field. In addition, these programs can help to break down the stereotype that men are naturally better at math and science.

“One accurate measurement is worth a thousand expert opinions.”
